FlashFoward: Early look into 2010 CFB season

With the 2009 College Football Season in the books, I felt it would be interesting to take an early peek into next season. Predictions, assumptions, and rankings are always exciting to explore because most of the time they hardly ever come true; especially in college football. Well, with that said I'm going to give my top 10 teams going into next season and maybe a few BOLD predictions.

First off, I would like to start by congradulating the Alabama Crimson Tide on an excellent undefeated season and National Title. I knew that it was only going to take Nick Saban a few years until he had them contending.

Also, lets take a quick look back at the '09 season:
First, the season began with the build up of 3 heisman contending qb's (McCoy, Bradford, & Tebow) but after the first 3 weeks that barnFIRE simmered to a mere blaze. Then, we had the emergance of the mid-MAJORs (Boise State, TCU, n etc.) which prompted major decision about whether they should be involved into BCS system. Honestly, they have an great argument for debate but computers(BCS) can't talk. Finally, We were down to 3 (Texas, Florida, and Alabama) even though there we still several unbeatens everyone knew that 2 of these 3 were going to play for title barring a mental-brain lapse (in which Colt McCoy had in Big 12 'ship). So, we ended up with Texas Vs. Bama and in some kind of way i feel like we were cheated because McCoy got hurt. But, whatever that's how sports goes and the Crimson Tide are the Champs.

Now on to the next one, and i must say that 2010 will be a more exciting year because most of the elite teams are replacing key players (well, expect for 'Bama). This should make for a great UN-predictable season and that's what makes college football so special. Here is my Top 10 PRE-preseason rankings (keyword MY):

1. Alabama - I would be insane to not put them #1 with them returning 85% of championship team. But I think they will have to develop some sort of passing game because most teams will start trying everything possible to stop the run. I think they are not taking advantage of having one of the best receivers in college. Very similar to the Florida team this season. I will be watching and interested in their improvement.
Recruiting: ranked 3rd, but really don't need much expect for a few defensive players to fill in.

2. Boise State - People have been giving Boise the cold-shoulder for years but all they keep doing is winning; almost everytime no matter whose lined up against them. So, I've decided to give them a little respect going into next year. They return just about all of their key contributors from this season (including QB Kellen Moore) and actually play a O.K. schedule early on. I am going to keep my eyes on them early and often because if they go undefeated again next season I think they will finally get in. HOPEFULLY!
Recruiting: Unknown rank, but they are known for swooping into Cali and other parts of west coast to steal some players so look out.

3. Oregon Ducks - Even though they lost in the Rose Bowl to Ohio State, i think Oregon has lapped USC as the powerhouse out of the west. They have QB Masoli and RB James returning to give them agrubly the best 1/2 combo in college, and with their HUGE budget (from Nike) I'm sure they will draw more top rated recruits. Also, i believe coaches are still having sleepless nights trying to figure how to stop their complex offense. If they can develop a consistent receiver to make a few BIG plays downfield, they may be making a title run. The Pac 10 has really fell off with USC's cheating. It will be interesting to see how this team evolves throughout the season.
Recruiting: Unranked but I'm positive they are hard on the trail trying to steal some top recruits.

4. Virginia Tech - Most of the world lost interest in VT when Mike Vick left but they have slowly crawled their way back to the top of the ACC. With slowly improving QB Tyrod Taylor and some strong young rushes, the Hokies dare to be a serious contender. VT has always had a impressive defense and I'm sure next season won't be any different. Also, this may be coach Frank Beamer's last hooray before he hangs up the whistle. They have a pretty intriguing schedule with dates with Boise, Central Mich., and East Carolina which should be a good challenge for the Hokies early on. I think the winner between them and Miami will probably have a chance at the national title.
Recruitiing: They are never in the discussion as having the top rated players but continue to produce good NFL players. Interesting.

5. Texas Longhorns - I know that alot of longhorns fans are very sour right now but their future couldn't be brighter. Even with this tough lost to Alabama, Texas still has a strong team returning; but they must develop QB Gilbert as quickly as possible to give them an opportunity to return to title game, because Oklahoma has a 10 game head start with Bradford going down early. Replacing Colt McCoy will be extremely difficult but I think they have the talent to do so. Their defense was strong this season and probably stay strong enough for the Big 12 (Oklahoma). I see them starting off slow but coming on strong in the later part of season.
Recruiting: ranked 2nd; their class seems to be very strong with a group of receivers, who should give Gilbert some much need help.

6. Ohio State - After an impressive Rose Bowl win over, I'm still not impressed with the Buckeyes. It may be a little hating but I just don't like the way Tressel runs his program. QB Pryor just doesn't have what it takes to lead them to the promise land, in my opinion. He's a great talent but definitely not a good QB. Now, they are trying to transform into a spread team and it just not their identity. They don't recruit the players to play that style of ball. Anyways, all I have to say is good luck Buckeye fans. I think you will be very disappointed about midway through next season.
Recruiting: ranked 12th, every 4 years they get an elite player to carry them through the BIG 10 but can't combine enough talent to win the big one.

7. Miami - The Hurricanes are steadily moving there way back into serious consideration. Coach Philips have brought some of their swagger back and added some disclipine. They have a bundle of talent returning and barring any major injuries or suspensions, they should be right there contending for the ACC. QB Ja'Cory Harris looked like an Heisman candidate after the first 5 weeks of this season and I think he will take that experience into next season to become a breakout player. Once they learn how to everything together, they will unstoppable. Look out for the Hurricanes in 2010.
Recruiting: ranked 14th, they always have a solid recruiting class with the wide-spread of players coming out of Florida every year.

8. LSU Tigers - EXPERIENCE. That has to be the key word for Tiger fans headed into the 2010 campaign. They have to hope that this team has gained enough experience to make a serious run at dethroning Alabama. The Tigers was probably one of the most talent-laden teams in the country this year but inconsistence at QB and inability to find an identity cost them an opportunity at knocking off Florida or Alabama. Les Miles and staff have their work cut out for them going into the off-season, because the expectations are only going to rise with the growing dominance of Saban's Studs. Hopefully, QB Jordan Jefferson has found his niche and ATH Russell Sheppard can get a consistent role. Their defense should be strong again with most of the secondary returning. LSU is my sleeper team going into next season because they can be great or gloom, depending on their development.
Recruiting: ranked 7th, Coach Miles has always been an great recruiter. If add a little more depth on defense and receivers, they should be straight.

9. Oklahoma - This had to be a cursed season for the Sooners. First, QB Sam Bradford goes down in the first game. Then, Texas makes it to the title game. But one thing that given is that Bob Stoops will have his team focused and ready to bounce back in 2010. One good thing that surfaced with all that bad luck was that they were able to get QB Landry Jones valuable experience. If RB Demarco Murray stays for his senior season, they will be right back where they left off. I'm sure Stoops and his staff will use this season as motivation. I think they will beat Texas in Red River Rivalry but lose to Nebraska in BiG 12 title game.
Recruiting: ranked 8th, With all of this time to start recruiting, I'm sure Stoops will grab a standout players. I think Stoops is the best recruiter in college football

10. Florida - Tebow effect. The Gators are the most intriguing team to me. I'm very interested in seeing how their offense adjusts without Tim Tebow. I tried to think back at how they were when Chris Leak was QB but we shall see what happens. On top of that Coach Urban Meyer has stressed his desire to retire but only to get talked out of it by his players and adminstration. I think that by midseason he will be regreting that decision. But one thing Florida got in their back pockets is that they are probably the hottest team in the country with recruits, but one bad season can change that. Their defense will be looked unto to carry this team all season. I just don't see it happening, especially with alot of SEC schools getting better. Good Luck, Gator Fans.
Recruiting: ranked 1st; they have been the hotspot for new recruits for the last several years. Hopefully, they can keep this trend going but it will be difficult. Really need some big play receivers.

Other receiving votes: Iowa, TCU, Nebraska, Arkansas, Georgia Tech, PITT, Wisconsin, Cinninatti, and Penn St.

College Football Power Rankings- Week 8

This season has been filled with alot of disappointed so far..With all the hype around the top 3 heisman candidates returning, many people thought this was gonna be one of those historical seasons to talk about for years..Well, sadly it has lived up to it YET!..With that said, last week brought about alot of interesting games and observations for the future..Here are my power rankings after week 8:

  1. Florida Gators- (7-0): The Gators have looked suspect at times during this season but with them being the champs, until someone beats them they gonna hold the top spot..they had a serious struggle with miss st. that brought about many questions about their offense and effectiveness of Tim Tebow..I think they will continue to roll to the SEC Championship.
  2. Texas Longhorns- (7-0): They have consistently got better and seems to be the team that is going to be "peaking at the right time" come BCS Nat'l Title time..Even though, Colt McCoy hasn't really blew people out with his numbers I still thinks he going to end up with the heisman..The Big 12 is really down this year and they have "backflipped" over their biggest hurdle (Oklahoma) so it looks like smooth sailing to the BCS title game for them.
  3. Alabama Crimson Tide- (8-0): I think 'Bama really showed their weakness this week..they were saved by the bell with that blocked kick to defeat Tenn..their defense is prolly the best when playing their best, but their O is very suspect at best..Ingram has been running like an mad man to give them some hope but I think will lose to LSU in 2 weeks.
  4. Cincinnati Bearkats- (7-0): I think Cinny is really flying under the radar and if Texas loses, LSU beats Ala & Fla, then they will get in the Nat'l title; well if they still undefeated..i think they are madly underrated and will continue to roll, even without their starting Qb..they still have a few tests to pass, with W.V. and Pitt, but i think they will win and see themselves smiling into the Orange Bowl.
  5. TCU Horned Frogs- (7-0): They have been the surprise team of the year..i mean, many people knew they were gonna be good but not this good..they have looked impressive in all of their games..i think they don't get an opportunity at the Nat'l title but i think they will be the only mid-major to get into the BCS.
  6. USC Trojans- (6-1): For some reason the Trojans have really been an disappointment this season so far..i think that lost to Washington really hurt them mentally..i don't think they have the high-power offense that has carried them in the past and their defense is questionable against an formable opponent..i think USC will get left out this year, but will blow someone out in their bowl AGAIN!
  7. LSU Tigers- (6-1): Out of all the teams out of the top 3, i think the Tigers controll their destiny; basically IF they win out their in the Nat'l title game..well, i guess that a HUGE IF cuz they still have games @ Ala, Ark, and Fla..but i believe they are hitting their stride at the right time and will beat all of them to get to the Nat'l title.
  8. Iowa Hawkeyes- (8-0): Now, the Hawkeyes has been the team that has benefitted from the BCS system the most this season..i feel that are no where close to being a top 5 team..yes, they have won all the games they have played but the competition has been mediocre at best..they still have their biggest test (Ohio St) coming up in a few weeks and if they get past that then maybe I'll give them some love..
  9. Boise State Broncos- (8-0): Well, the Broncos keep winning but sadly they will start to see their "dream" season quickly get taken away from them as the season goes..they have looked great in their games but the competition has been terrible..SERIOUSLY!..i think TCU will blow them out head to head so this is why they will go undefeated and themselves out of the BCS.
  10. Oregon Ducks- (6-1): After losing to Boise St in their first game, I definitely thought this was gonna be a missed season for the Ducks but they have rebounded and have put themselves in position to make some noise this season..this week's game @ USC is crucial..this is a must W..if they W, then they can sudden creep into the Nat'l title talks.
Disclaimer: this is only my thoughts and feelings about the season..if you disagree then that's your opinion!
